Relevance of Time Spent on Web Pages

چکیده

What is the intention of an online visitor? This is one of the most valuable pieces of information for an online service provider. In the case of a real-world shop, customers have the ability to explicitly express what they are looking for. However, on the web, the intention is hidden and can only be partially revealed from implicit indicators in the traces users leave behind while they browse through a website. The vast majority of researchers in web usage mining exploit only two types of information: the order of visited pages and their popularity i.e. the number of times they were visited. However, several studies in information retrieval and human-computer interaction have suggested a third factor, the time spent on web pages (TSP), as an important measure of intention and relevance. The key contributions of this paper are: (1) an extensive survey of possible factors that influence the TSP measure, and (2) a similarity measure that applies to TSP and can be used to cluster users based on their assumed intentions. Our experiments are based on log files generated by several commercial websites.

A New Hybrid Method for Web Pages Ranking in Search Engines

There are many algorithms for optimizing the search engine results, ranking takes place according to one or more parameters such as; Backward Links, Forward Links, Content, click through rate and etc. The quality and performance of these algorithms depend on the listed parameters. The ranking is one of the most important components of the search engine that represents the degree of the vitality...

Mining Navigation Histories for User Need Recognition

The time spent using a web browser on a wide variety of tasks such as research activities, shopping or planning holidays is relevant. Web pages visited by users contain important hints about their interests, but empirical evaluations show that almost 40-50% of the elements of the web pages can be considered irrelevant w.r.t. the user interests driving the browsing activity. Moreover, pages migh...

Web Usage Mining by Means of Multidimensional Sequence Alignment Methods

In this article, a new algorithm called Multidimensional Sequence Alignment Method (MDSAM) is illustrated for mining navigation patterns on a web site. MDSAM examines sequences composed of several information types, such as visited pages and visiting time spent on pages. Besides, MDSAM handles large databases and uses heuristics to compute a multidimensional cost based on one-dimensional optima...

مدل جدیدی برای جستجوی عبارت بر اساس کمینه جابه‌جایی وزن‌دار

Finding high-quality web pages is one of the most important tasks of search engines. The relevance between the documents found and the query searched depends on the user observation and increases the complexity of ranking algorithms. The other issue is that users often explore just the first 10 to 20 results while millions of pages related to a query may exist. So search engines have to use sui...

User Behaviour Analysis Based on Time Spent on Web Pages

Nowadays Internet and network related service and content providers try to collect valuable service usage data and process it using different methods to know their user’s behaviours. Heretofore quality of online contents is measured with number of page impressions (a request to load a single page of an Internet site) or number of hits (refers to a request for a file from a web server). But both...
